Humpty Dumpty may have cracked after falling off the wall, but the Okanagan Hockey Academy prep team fell harder following a 10-0 loss.

Blake Wesley, coach of the OHA prep team, said his team laid a big egg against the Edge Prep School from Calgary.

It was their worst loss against the Canadian Sports Schools Hockey League’s best team during the five-team tournament at the South Okanagan Events Centre. Also featured were the Pursuit of Excellence from Kelowna, Banff Academy and Swiss International Sports and Education Centre Selects from Cochrane, Alta.

“I was very disappointed with the results,” said Wesley, as his team defeated SISEC 6-1 and lost to POE 5-3. “Two weeks ago when we played in Cleveland we were finalists in a tournament against Team Ohio. I thought it was a very high level of competition like we had here this weekend.”

The OHA’s competitive level wasn’t where Wesley wanted it in all areas.

“I really thought that we were well prepared,” he added. “We made a little bit of progress after a poor showing on Friday night. On Saturday we changed a few things. Sunday I thought we were ready to play and we got off to what I thought was a fairly good start. We engaged physically and then they (Edge) scored a shorthanded goal. The wind went out of our sails and they just sort of looked at each other. Everybody was looking for excuses and explanations on how tough it was going to be to come back and play.”

Wesley, who coached the Summerland Sting in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League for the last three years, planned to put his players through a hard skate on Tuesday with physical battles in hopes of seeing a positive result.

“Quite frankly, we quit,” he said. “That’s certainly not a characteristic or trademark that I have ever seen from our hockey team until Sunday. We have to develop a culture and an attitude that we don’t quit.”

The OHA prep team is fourth in the five-team league at 1-2. Edge School Prep is undefeated after six games.

OHA’s varsity team also competed but played just one game. They were scheduled to play POE on Friday but half the team was sick with the flu. On Saturday, OHA defeated the Banff Hockey Academy 6-1.

“We have come a long way in the two months we’ve been together,” said coach Rob Dirk, who played for St. Louis, Vancouver, Chicago, Anaheim and Montreal in the NHL. “We have a long ways to go to where we need to be as a team and the guys as players.”

Dirk’s main focus is consistency, raising the competition and skill level for players.

“They are starting to understand that,” he said. “We’re getting close to being a very good hockey club.”

Sean Alldridge led the OHA offensively with a goal and four points, while Kolbi O’Brien had a goal and three points and Lewis Gold with two goals. Other scorers were Cam Weir and Grant Nicholson.
