Youth was the main factor helping Canada defeat the World 39-7 at McNicoll Park on Saturday.
The Penticton Harlequins split their club into two teams and played a seven-a-side rugby format. This benefited the Canadian team led by captain Brian Moore and high school student Jordan Simpson, who scored two tries.
“It’s pretty cool because rugby was just announced as an Olympic sport with rugby sevens joining the Olympics in 2016 (in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil),” said Dave Bellomo, a member of the Penticton Harlequins, who dressed on the Canadian side. “It was nice to be able to play that. It’s a much faster version of the sport and a lot more exciting.”
Fans cheered both sides as flags from South Africa, Britain, Australia and Canada decorated the field. The World side was represented by players from South Africa, Ethiopia and France.
While the final score was lopsided, Bellomo said the World made a comeback attempt early in the second half. However, a couple of quick scores for Canada put the game out of reach. Topping off the game was a gathering at the Harlequins
Rugby Club.
