Three game losing skid hits Penticton Lakers

Three losses in as many days for the Penticton Lakers has head coach Alan Kerr going back to the drawing board.
"I thought the first two games we made a lot of mistakes but competed hard and battled back from major deficits ... (Sunday) we didn't make any major mistakes but we got outworked in the third period where we had to step up and take the game away from them," said Kerr after Sunday's 2-0 loss at the hands of the Chase Chiefs.
The Lakers kicked off their full weekend of action against the Princeton Posse having to dig themselves out of a four goal deficit. By the third period their hard work paid off as goals from Connor Tamai and Oliver McCluskey (both with their second offerings on the night) with only minutes remaining tied it up 6-6. An unlucky bounce with just 15 seconds left in the game saw the puck veer off a skate into the Lakers net, giving the Posse the 7-6 win.
On the road in Kamloops to face the Storm the Lakers ran into the same problems. Two powerplay goals and a shorthanded marker by the Storm ended any hopes of a Lakers comeback. An empty net goal in the third period game gave the hosts the 6-3 victory.
"We had blatant mistakes that cost us three goals, otherwise I thought we carried the flow of the game. When I mean major mistakes I mean giving the puck away shorthanded that led to a goal, falling in the slot and losing the puck to let them walk in for a goal, changing at inappropriate times and obvious minor hockey poor decisions," said Kerr.
By Sunday afternoon the Lakers were hoping they had left their mistakes on the road and were hungry for a win. A goaltending battle between Lakers netminder Adam Harris and Chiefs back stopper Cole Roberts ensued until early in the third period when the Chiefs took the lead and carried the game from there, eventually winning 2-0.
The Lakers couldn't connect on seven powerplay tries while Harris kept his team in the game turning away 41 shots, earning one of the three stars of the game.
With only one day rest, the Lakers look forward to a re-match against the Storm this Tuesday at 7 p.m. on their home ice at the South Okanagan Events Centre community rink. In the meantime they will be shaking off the mistakes made on the weekend and looking for redemption.
"We will be really aggressive with Kamloops. We don't think their defense is the strong part of their team. They have some good guys up front and a very good goaltender so there will be a lot of pressure put on him," said Kerr speaking of Storm goaltender Anthony Manfredi. "When you play against a guy like Manfredi that is too good to be in this league you have to get a lot of traffic in front of him."
