Stories better than breaking wind

The dogs days of summer can make it challenging for journalists and other media outlets to continually give it 110 per cent.

Stories aren’t always knockin’ on our door, but I discovered something recently that made me wonder if this outlet was truly desperate for stories. The outlet will remain anonymous as I wouldn’t want to burn a future employment bridge, but they had a story in which Tiger Woods walked close to his caddy to break wind on the 18th fairway of the Buick Open. Here’s the link to the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kL3nZJeHIIE.

As most websites do, people can make comments and not many people held back on their thoughts regarding this one.

Petesin07 posted, “Really? I fart every day, including when I play golf. Who cares?” or mutaa, “Which way was the wind blowing” or petzky said “Give me a break. Tiger passes gas is the top story of the day LOL! Must be a slow day. What’s next the great one sticks a finger up his nose?”

If the goal of the story was to get reaction from people; it worked. As for Penticton, there’s a few good things people should know about.

.The Try A Sport event attracted 82 kids and raised a record $2,130. That’s great to see the community support this, but most importantly, kids had a good time playing eight sports. Next year it will be martial arts and yoga.

. On Saturday Penticton’s Mark Dobie will make his mixed martial arts pro debut at the SOEC and is confident he will get a win. Clay Davidson will be after his third consecutive win.

.While the heat is still on in Penticton, rain will help cool things down, but hockey season is inching its way back. That is a sign of fall doing the same. Vees fans will be excited with it just a month away as of next Tuesday. Vees coach-GM Fred Harbinson was busy adding important pieces to the Vees roster.

The Vees have 13 returnees with Eric Filiou joining the group. Filiou is a 5-11, 178 pound forward from Quebec acquired for Brodie Reid from Nanaimo, who was eventually dealt to the Brooks Bandits. In 107 BCHL games all with Nanaimo, Filiou tallied 42 goals and 104 points. The BCHL just announced that the Vees will be part of a four-team preseason tournament hosted by the Trail Smoke Eaters Aug. 28-30 which will also feature the Powell River Kings and the Bandits. If you’ve never been to Trail, it’s worth the drive to check out the beautiful Kootenays and catch some hockey at Cominco Arena. The Vees take on the Kings on Friday at 3 p.m., the Bandits Saturday at 3 p.m. and conclude with an evening matchup with the Smoke Eaters at 2 p.m.

.Bite or be bit. The BCHL recently announced a change to its All-Star game format. The RBC champion Vernon Vipers will face the BCHL All-Stars in Nanaimo on Jan. 13 in what is expected to add excitment to the game.

.Bruce Affleck, Chad Campbell and Bob Nicholson aren’t the only ones stepping up to help kids play sports. KidSport Penticton processed 39 applications in the months of January through March of 2008. That total was equaled this year. KidSport supports various minor organizations, while Jump Start also supports various sports. Dave Lieskovsky, chair of the Penticton KidSport committee, said the organization receives a lot of praise from the community for its support.

While none of those stories bring the humour that Woods passing gas does, they sure make for worthwhile headlines.
