Super sprints race makes splash on Skaha Lake

The Penticton Paddling Centre is hosting the Okanagan Super Sprints on Saturday on Skaha Lake. The first Okanagan Dragon Boat race of the season will see over 250 paddlers from Penticton, Kelowna and Osoyoos competing on the 250m course. At half the length of a regular dragon boat race (500-metres), the Sprints allow teams to train all the technical aspects of racing over a shorter distance.
"At first glance it looks like it should be easier to race the shorter distance, but it's even more intense", said Sharen deGelder, coach of several teams, and a paddler with Survivorship - The South Okanagan Breast Cancer Survivor dragon boat team. "You get to work on things like your start, but the racing remains really, really close for the whole 250 metres!"
Racing starts Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m., with new races starting every 15 minutes. The race course is set to parallel the beach at Skaha Lake (near the marina and Kid's Water Park), making for great viewing of the entire event. The finals start at 11:45 a.m. with racing wrapping up approximately 12:30 pm. For more information contact the Penticton Paddling Centre at 1-866-658-6333 or visit www.pentictondragonboat.com
