Tireless fundraising efforts bring recognition to Naramata man
Canvassing door-to-door even once is something that most people would not consider an enjoyable endeavour. Now imagine doing it completely alone for three straight years. That is what Fred Von Heyking, a Naramata resident, has done since 2005 for the Kidney Foundation’s March Drive campaign.
The effort that Von Heyking has put in has certainly been worthwhile — he single-handedly raised over $1,000 this March earning him the March Drive Honour award.
“While I haven’t been personally touched by kidney disease, I know others who have been and I want to contribute however I can,” said Von Heyking.
Not only has Von Heyking willingly and happily volunteered his time every year when Kidney Health Month roles around, he has actually increased the donations coming out of Naramata.
“It’s amazing that someone has put that much effort and care into raising money,” said Teresa Atkinson, director at large of the foundation’s B.C. chapter.
As someone who suffers from kidney disease, Atkinson has a true appreciation for how important each dollar raised truly is.
“The money that he raises goes to help provide local patient services and programs and more,” added Atkinson
Since he began volunteering for the Kidney Foundation in 2002, Von Heyking has become the sole canvasser for Naramata and has ensured that donations each year haven’t dropped below $500.
Prior to 2001, donations in Naramata averaged $126 per year and now, as a result of Von Heyking’s efforts, donations have increased to $1,064 in 2007 — up 800 per cent.
“I feel that knowing everyone in town is a real asset when canvassing,” said Von Heyking.
The March Drive campaign is a Canada-wide canvassing event organized by the Kidney Foundation to raise money as well as awareness of the importance of kidney health.
While the 2008 funds raised have not yet been fully tallied, it is estimated that more than $500,000 was raised across B.C.
