Tom Jackson sings for everyone’s supper
Singing for Supper isn’t about some artist looking for a handout; it’s a concert dedicated to giving the less fortunate in our communities a hand up.
Tom Jackson — actor, singer and philanthropist — has spent 22 years lending a hand. Originally with his Huron Carol Christmas concerts and, for the last six years, Singing for Supper, Jackson has raised more than $10 million for food banks, family service agencies and disaster relief.
“This year, for the first time, I have attained peace for myself personally,” said Jackson. “However, there is a blemish. We are surrounded by conflict. With one third of the world’s population living in abject poverty, it is imperative we take action. I don’t know if we — the people, the various levels of government, and the global community — are doing enough. All I know is that to change the world, I sing.”
Jackson is bringing Singing for Supper to Penticton’s Cleland Theatre at 7 p.m. on Dec. 7. Unlike many benefit concerts, where a portion of the proceeds go to charity, Jackson relies on sponsors to cover the costs of the production, allowing him to pass on all the money from ticket and CD sales. In this case, the Soupateria and the Salvation Army Food Bank will split the funds raised at the concert.
In addition, Jackson and company will be collecting food donations at the concert.
The first hour of the concert opens with Shannon Gaye, followed by Pear, artists who have played with Jackson for a number of years, bringing their R&B, pop and country sounds to his annual concerts. Jackson takes the stage for the second hour, delivering classic and contemporary Christmas selections.
So far, Jackson and local organizer Andrina Iliffe have recruited a number of local sponsors, including the Penticton Western News, the City of Penticton, the Lakeside Resort and Conference Centre, EZ Rock, Giant FM, Peach City Beach Cruise, the Wine Country Visitor Centre and Save-on-Foods.
The complete tour schedule and ticket details can be found at www.singingforsupper.ca. Tickets are $20 each and are available at the Wine Country Visitor Centre.
