Don’t expect cash, cars and crime — the typical faire of hip hop songs these days — when local artist Zane Gold and Vancouver’s Bobby Brillo take the stage at the New Element night club this Saturday.

Although, there will be a lot of partying. The pair want everyone to come to the Element to celebrate with them as they prepare to set the crowd on fire with an energetic show and unveil their newest single which is accompanied by a video that is slated to appear on MuchMusic.

“It will be an interactive and energetic show because both of us are crazy guys so it is going to be a lot of fun. Most of the songs are about having fun and a good-time and of course, about women, because we love women,” said Brillo with a laugh.

The lyric-spitter is not new to this game. He has been performing for the past 10 years and appeared on mixtapes hosted by Blackalicious, Charli 2na of the Jurrasic 5 and MC Opio of Hieroglyphics.

“I have grown and have gone from my former alias of Flip da Lip to an older and smarter person who has learned a lot more,” he said.

Like it was some sort of pre-planned destiny, it all came together for the pair in Penticton. While doing a show with Crazy Cutz Records at The Mule about six years ago, Brillo was handed mix-tape that found its way into the car stereo on his way back home to Vancouver.

“We were thinking at the time that this kid is going to go somewhere,” said Brillo of the studio basement recording that was given to him by Zane. “Then six to seven years later here we are working together.”

Zane, who is from Penticton, asked Brillo to join him after he secured funding from VideoFact — a foundation to assist Canadian talent that is funded entirely by MuchMusic, MuchMoreMusic and MusiquePlus. Along with Vancouver-based Triton Films they created the video for the first single off the Zane featuring Bobby Brillo debut album London Fog called Like a Dime.

The video is expected to be aired on MuchMusic in the coming weeks and the pair plan on dropping their album by late October. Already the first single can be found on CDBaby and ITunes, eventually it will be available on Amazon.

“It is not like a cliche hip hop video, it has a story line to it,” said Zane. “It is a little bit more mature which is cool because I’m not some young teenager.”

Zane is hoping that once it gets some airplay on the radio it will go viral and everyone will be checking his video out, whether that be on MuchMusic or on YouTube.

“It’s tough to be an independent artist and do everything yourself. What we have been doing is getting my friends, family and fans to phone radio stations and bug the hell out of them to play the song and eventually they will,” said Zane.

The pair plan to tour for the next couple of months and Zane has already applied for another VideoFact grant to produce a video for his second single SOD, which he wants to shoot right in Penticton.

“I want to do a really big production with all the resources I have here for that song and hopefully it will go right across the country because already Like A Dime has sparked a lot of interest,” he said.

The single, Like A Dime, will be featured on the Fresh Battle Tracks on Sun FM on Monday and the public can vote from 11:15 a.m. to noon. If the track wins it will remain on the air.
