Community Centred — A salute to seniors

I would like to start off by saying how impressed I am with our Penticton seniors. We had thousands out for the Senior’s Symposium and my programs are so packed with those who want to “rage against age.”

The four ladies that came on our Cathedral Lower Lakes Tour last month were an inspiration to my 23-year-old leader and your enthusiastic reviews meant so much to me. The Penticton Steps Out walking program has had a whopping 1,782 participants and well over half are showing “grey” or have no hair at all.

Our Get Active Penticton Speaker Series is full of seniors and my hikes are the same. On Monday, Wednesday and Fridays, between 8:30 a.m. and 2 p.m., we have a spunky seniors' drop-in volleyball group (and room for more) as well as pickleball and badminton with lots of older adults. My pole walking classes are almost all filled with the “grey gang” too. Here at the Community Centre the quote “If you didn’t know your age – how old would you be” really applies to these active older adults.

Our final speaker of the fall season is fantastic for any age and he’s free thanks to Nature’s Fare — seniors will like that price for sure! “Your Solutions to Awaken Your Body” with Brad King is on Nov. 5, at 6:30 p.m. in the Cleland Theatre.

Brad King has been referred to as one of the most influential health mentors of our time and is widely recognized as one of Canada’s most sought after authorities on nutrition, specializing in weight loss, longevity, hormones, women’s and men’s health. He is the sports nutritionist for Athletes United and the author of five books including, Awaken Your Metabolism, Fat Wars, The Undiet Plan, Bio Age 10 Steps to a Younger You, and his latest book, Beer Belly Blues. Brad’s depth of knowledge and sense of humour entertains, educates and motivates all who attend his lectures! To ensure a seat, pick up your tickets in advance at the Penticton Community Centre.

Why not make this fall your best ever and try something new, social and fun! For more information on our programs or seminars call 490-2426 or go to www.penticton/ca and click on our Fall Recreation Guide.

Bob Pope is the recreation co-ordinator with the City of Penticton.
