This year’s $65,000 donation to local community organizations has pushed the Okanagan Fest-of-Ale Society contributions to nearly a quarter million dollars since 2003.

Representatives of the nearly two dozen groups which received a slice of this year’s financial pie were given cheques just prior to the board’s annual general meeting this week at the Lakeside Resort.

Society officials credited the efforts of all those involved with the planning and operation of the April festival for making it one of the most successful ever.

“It is important to the non-profit society that we achieve our five goals, which are: to promote overnight visits to Penticton during the shoulder season; to ensure all microbrewers are able to promote their products at an affordable event; to ensure the event does not compete with our local restaurants, pubs and nightclubs during peak hours; to run a responsible consumer tasting event in partnership with B.C. Liquor Stores Get Home Safe Program; and most importantly, to support a number of local registered charities” said Wayne Schmuck, OFOA marketing chair.

From May 1- June 15 registered charitable community organizations are invited to submit their request for community funding from the net proceeds of the annual Fest-of-Ale.

The 2008/2009 recipients include:

n Agur Lake Camp Society

n British Columbia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals

n Community Foundation of the South Okanagan — OFOA Legacy Fund

n DARE British Columbia Society — Penticton and Summerland
