School District 67’s board of education approved the participation of McNicoll Park Middle and Summerland Secondary Schools in an international survey on the health status of young people conducted by Queen’s University on behalf of the WHO.
Between the two schools, one class from each of grades 6 through 10 will be asked to fill out a questionnaire, taking about an hour to complete.
“The findings will increase understanding about the health behaviours of young people and will be used to promote good health practices among youth to influence policy around youth and school health in Canada,” reported district staff.
According to superintendent of schools, Wendy Hyer, the survey will include questions ranging from eating, health and safety habits and routines to students’ perceptions regarding homework loads and teacher fairness.
The survey will also include four questions regarding students’ sexual activity. Describing the sexual activity questions as “mild,” Hyer assured the board that the questions were less explicit than questions poised to district students in previous surveys.
Students do not have to answer all the questions in the survey, she confirmed.
