Event pays tribute to Okanagan Falls cowboy
The Okanagan Falls Royal Canadian Legion and Lions Club are hoping to round up a large posse to rustle up some funds for the Kenny McLean sculpture.
A Beans and Jeans social featuring a dinner, dance and casino night on Oct. 24 will serve as way for people to donate towards a life-size sculpture of the well-known cowboy. The sculpture is to be installed in Centennial Park in the spring of 2010 in Okanagan Falls.
McLean was born in Penticton in 1939 but lived in Okanagan Falls. He started breaking colts for his father when he was just 12 years old and went on to rodeo competitions at the age of 17. McLean won 14 Canadian Championships, the World Saddle Bronc Championship and was inducted into the Canadian Rodeo Cowboy Hall of Fame. He is also the only cowboy inducted into the B.C. Sports Hall of Fame and the only cowboy to be honoured with the Order of Canada.
During his life he sponsored and ran rodeo schools, training many future champions while encouraging young competitors right up until he passed away in 2002.
The Beans and Jeans social is on Oct. 24 at the Royal Canadian Legion with dinner served at 6:30 p.m. and the dance starting at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $12 and available at the door on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information contact Louise Navin at 250-497-7152.
