Community Centred — New programs fall into place

The fall Penticton Community Centre recreation guide comes out Aug. 21. You also can get our program information on the web at www.penticton.ca or you can call the front desk at 250-490-2423. Here is a just a sample of some the great programs we have to offer.

New programs for preschoolers include: ABC Music and Me exploring music and singing; Alphabet Soup children (with parents) learning the ABCs with handouts to continue the learning at home; learning what’s under our skin with Dr. Bones; Tiny Toes and Princess Ballet for budding ballerinas; and teaching children how to respond to danger and how parents can minimize risk with Child Proof.

Discover Snorkelling for swimmers eight years and older will make the most of your snorkelling adventures, perfect for anyone going on a winter holiday. Red Cross Swim Basics for Teens (12-18 years old) is for anyone who didn’t complete swimming lessons or doesn’t feel comfortable in the water and doesn’t want to join regular swim lessons with kids half their age.

Parent and Child Date Nights return in November with Dad and Daughter on Nov. 18 and Mom and Son on Nov. 19 with a dinner and special craft and social time. Introduction to Curling for 8-12 year olds teaches throwing rocks, sweeping, rules and game play.

For adults we have a couple of classes based on the 100 Mile Diet (purchasing locally grown food in season). Preserves for Great Gifts will teach you how to preserve fruit and vegetables, both for home consumption and to give as gifts. And Vegetarian Cooking “The 100 Mile Diet” is a tasty, hands on class where you get to eat what you make.

The GetActive Penticton speaker series begins in September with talks on healthy foods and healthy living. Sam Graci presents The Path to Phenomenal Health on Sept. 11 (free advance tickets) and Art Hister’s Guide to Living a Long and Healthy Life on Sept. 30 ($5 advance tickets, $10 at the door and free for Penticton Steps Out members.)

And don’t forget our shorter hours during our annual three week maintenance: Aug. 29 to Sept. 20 the pool is closed and the building is only open Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Ted Hagmeier is a recreation co-ordinator with the City of Penticton.
