Air tankers and a helicopter battled a wildfire in a steep canyon above Eastside Road about five kilometres south of Penticton this afternoon.

The fire, as of 6 o'clock this evening, appears to be under control, although strong winds from the south were active until nightfall.

Fire ratings remain high in spite of the time of year. Smoke from the fire could be seen drifting north of Penticton at dusk. As darkness descended on Monday night, a small amount of smoke was still visible rising from the ravine.

The fire does not appear to pose a threat to any structures at this time, although there are residences in the vicinity.

It is not known at this time if ground personnel have been deployed to continue firefighting efforts through the night.

No further details are known at this time.
