About Us
Back in February of 1951, the Winfield Women's Institute decided to start publishing a monthly newsletter. The Calendar, as they called it, soon became the official record for the 800 residents of the three small communities it served, listing births, deaths, upcoming events and even progress reports on the many building projects in the growing community. They even kept track of the new families moving to the area.
Over the decades, those new families kept on coming. By 1995, the growth had reached a level that the residents of the four small communities -Winfield, Oyama, Okanagan Centre and Carr's Landing- voted to incorporate, creating a single municipal government for the area, now known as the District of Lake Country.
And as Lake Country grew, the Calendar grew as well, woven into the very fabric of the community. By 1979, the paper had been purchased from its current publishers, the Ladies Hospital Auxilary, by Jack McCarthy and his partner, John Gable.
McCarthy and Gable had big plans for the Calendar. Their first step was to transform the newsletter into a weekly tabloid. But their vision didn't stop there. Both dedicated community men, the partners saw how the paper could be used to build and strengthen community ties.
In 2007, Jack McCarthy retired, and the paper became part of the Black Press newspaper family. But the Calendar still lives by the principles and traditions established by McCarthy, remaining dedicated to telling the stories of the people that bring this community to life.
