Busy festival weekend in Okanagan Falls

Okanagan Falls celebrated another very successful Okanagan Falls Days this past weekend.

Friday afternoon brought warm, sunny weather and strong winds as Okangan Falls saw the official opening of the skateboard park, which has become a new attraction in Keogan Park.

“It was just wonderful, “ commented Bob Daly of Okanagan Parks and Recreation.

“We had a great turnout of kids of all ages to open the skateboard park, and we are really thrilled to have the skate park open.”

A baseball game between the Legion and the Lions Club rounded out activities for Friday in the park. The baseball game included cheerleaders for both sides, and turned out to be a thoroughly enjoyable affair between the two service groups.

Keogan Park is fast becoming a showpiece for Okanagan Falls. The park, a former alfalfa field that has been seven years in the making, has been assembled without expense to the taxpayer.

A meat draw and steak dinner followed at the Legion.

Saturday morning’s pancake breakfast dawned with overcast skies and rain, which lasted approximately an hour before clearing skies just in time for the parade.

Starting at Keogan Park and winding up Cedar Street to Eleventh Avenue before concluding at Centennial Park, the parade drew many spectators to the edge of the street to watch the colourful collection of antique cars and floats.

The afternoon saw a steady turnout of locals to Centennial Park where a number of vendors and local groups offered food and drink, demonstrations, and entertainment.

“One of our new events was the head shave, where eight people offered to get shaved as part of a fund raiser for the South Okanagan Medical Foundation” said Linda Routley, one of the Legion organizers for the event.

“It took a while, but during the afternoon several people started to step forward.” Eight people eventually took part in the head shave.

“This (Okanagan Falls Days) is an event the whole community gets involved in,” she said.
