Last week’s wintery weather appears to have sent the last of the campers on the Similkameen River near Pine Park in Keremeos packing.

On Monday there was little evidence of occupation on the sandy island in the middle of the Similkameen River channel.

There remains roughly a pickup load of assorted trash, discarded cookware, clothing, sleeping and tenting gear, left behind after the summer’s activities.

A couple of tents remain standing, but look as though they have been abandoned.

The Village of Keremeos is looking for constructive suggestions and ideas with respect to putting a program in place for transient labour in time for next year’s growing season.

The mayor and council have committed themselves to finding a solution to the issue of transients’ squatting by next May, but they admit that public input and action will be a vital part of the process.

Several residents in the Pine Park area have expressed an interest in working with local, provincial, or federal agencies to find a solution to the camping issue as well.

Anyone with any ideas as to how and what might be done to resolve the issue is invited to call the village office with their suggestions and comments at: 250-499-2711.
