Playing without two of its top scorers, the Westside Warriors didn’t fill the net Sunday afternoon against Quesnel.
But they didn’t have to, thanks to the work of goaltender Kevin Jebson.
Jebson stopped all but one of the 32 shots he faced in a 2-1 Westside win over the Quesnel Millionaires Sunday.
It was the 20-year-old goalies seventh straight B.C. Hockey League start as the Warriors have begun the season 5-and-2.
“I told coach I wanted to play all 60 games but he said that wasn’t possible,” said Jebson with a chuckle. “I’d love to play them all.”
Sunday Jebson had a bid for his first shutout of the season ruined when Quesnel made the score 2-1 with 2:30 to play in the game. The Warriors held on for the win on earlier goals from Scott MacDonald and Kyle Singleton.
Top scorers Cam Reid and Grayson Downing missed the game to attend the Team Canada West training camp in Alberta in advance of this year’s World Junior A Challenge.
Jebson said that allowed some of the Warriors other players the chance to step up.
“At the start of the year it was all the vets doing the scoring but the last couple game we’re starting to get some production from rookies and our second and third lines,” he said. “I think we have a pretty good squad.”
The Warriors will have a tough test this Friday as the Vernon Vipers are in West Kelowna to play the Warriors.
The Vipers are 6-and-0 sa far this season.
Downing and Reid are expected back from the Team Canada West evaluation camp. The World Junior A Challenge is in Summerside PEI this year from Nov. 1 to 8.
