Dog walking manners

Open letter to dog walkers:

Thank you to those who respect the bylaws and rules of the Mission Greenway. To the few who neglect the obvious, it’s about respect.

I was doing a favour for my friend today by taking his dog out for a walk. I do not know the dog extremely well, but I know that she is very loving and playful. Out of respect and being a seasoned dog walker myself, when other dogs and their owners walked by I would stop on the side and let them pass. I do not know how my friend’s dog will react to all dogs, so I thought this was the best thing to do. It seemed to be effective and everyone who passed was thankful and friendly.

Next, enter the wicked, unlawful citizen.

I saw this woman walking a tiny Chihuahua blinged up to the nines. As she was approaching, I stopped and pulled my friend’s dog close, thinking this is an obvious sign for her to pass. Instead, she sauntered along. I then realized her dog was not on a leash. Meanwhile, my friend’s dog is being taunted by the Chihuahua as it trotted from side to side along the path.

I asked the woman to put her dog on the leash. “Thanks for letting me know,” was the snooty response.

“Well, could you please?” I ask again.

“She is out for a walk.”

“Yes, and she should be on a leash. It’s the law.”

This is when the broom made its appearance and words spoken that are way to profane to write in this letter.

I was trying to be respectful to others and their dogs. Rather than reciprocate respectfully, I was cussed at and left feeling completely baffled by this woman’s reaction.

So to all dog walkers—I thank you again for the respect that most all of you give. But to the few that believe that the world revolves around only your dog and you, wake up. Follow the rules and bylaws, and have some respect.

It makes for a more pleasant walk for everyone.
