Gellaty Nut Farm Park proposal comes with a hefty price tag

A proposed expansion of the Gellatly Nut Farm could come with a hefty price.

Gellatly Nut Farm Society president Carl Zanon has written to District of West Kelowna council proposing that the municipality seize the opportunity to purchase a $3.7-million lot at 4215 Gellatly Road, west of the Cove Resort.

A proposed 97-unit multifamily development for the site never materialized and the lot was subsequently put up for sale.

“This property is available and our society encourages council to act now,” stated Zanon.

The property’s location next to the existing Gellatly Nut Farm Regional Park make it ideal for expansion of park amenities, he said.

“Further, there is an immediate need to develop parking for cars at Gellatly Nut Farm Society events, and parking for cars/boat trailers associated with the development of Gellatly Bay.”

While the municipality developed a site plan, an existing house could temporarily house the Westbank Museum, Zanon offered as an example of multiple uses for the property.

Purchase financing could be arranged over 20 years, he said.

The society’s letter is on council’s Tuesday night agenda.

Meanwhile, the Central Okanagan Regional District is announcing the purchase of almost $1 million worth of parks properties for the expansion of the Trepanier Greenway above Peachland, the proposed Lebanon Creek Greenway in the Mission and Coldham Regional Park near Peachland.

In total, the five properties will add more than seven hectares to the regional parks system.

The purchases are part of the $18 million Parks Legacy Program that the regional board has planned to implement in two phases, this year and in 2010.
