Reid to focus on civic duties

When you are a businesswoman, city councillor, deputy leader of a provincial political party and involved in numerous local issues, there comes a time when something’s got to give.
That time has come for Kelowna’s Angela Reid, who has stepped down as deputy leader of the B.C. Green Party.
“Due to my role on council, I found I just couldn’t do everything,” said Reid, who notified the party of her intention to step down shortly after she was elected to city council last November but agreed to stay on over the summer while the party found a replacement.
The party announced on Monday it has chosen Penticton businessman Julius Bloomfield as its new deputy leader.
Bloomfield, who ran for the Greens in the last provincial election in the Penticton riding, finished third out of five candidates with 15.6 per cent of the vote, nearly double his party’s provincial vote percentage.
“It’s always sad when you have to take one hat off,” said Reid, but she added she will continue to serve on the party’s council.
Reid also said she has talked to Green leader Jane Sterk about a new role related to a position as one of 20 Green Party members who now sit on municipal councils across B.C. While she does not consider herself to be a “Green Party municipal councillor,” she said there are issues that she and her Green colleagues elsewhere can coordinate.
“I realize it’s a non-partisan position on council and I’m sure I’ve voted for some things (on council) that would go against Green Party policies,” said Reid. She said the current mixture on council make it one of the strongest she has seen. “I think we have the most balanced council ever right now.”
