Quick-thinking apartment residents kept a dryer fire from spreading to an entire building on Sunday.

Assistant fire chief Thomas Doherty said the fire at the Bristol Apartments during the afternoon of Oct. 18 started in a dryer in a unit on the second floor.

Doherty said the fire was initially reduced by residents of the unit using a fire extinguisher on the blaze.

“Their actions reduced the spread of fire, which enabled the firefighters to extinguish the fire quickly on arrival, reducing the amount of damage.”

Doherty noted that the fire was contained to the dryer, but there was smoke damage to the unit around it.

He said no injuries were reported to residents or the family pets. Three fire engines, two ladder trucks, a command unit and a safety unit attended the fire at 12:45 p.m., at 475 Franklyn Rd. RCMP and the B.C. Ambulance Service also attended.
