Conference to look at climate change ‘opportunities’
Updated: October 17, 2009 9:52 PM
Whether you believe in climate change or not, it presents economic opportunities that Canada is not taking advantage of.
With that in mind, the Okanagan Environmental Industry Alliance is hosting the second annual conference and exhibition called Solutions for Climate Prosperity, at the Rotary Centre for the Arts Tuesday, Oct. 20, for everyone interested in focussing on energy efficiency.
David Mayes, chairman of the OEIA, says we could create an economic boom by viewing climate change as an economic opportunity as well as a challenge.
“We believe it’s a glass half full,” he commented.
He expects the day-long conference will be of interest to developers, builders, architects, engineers, scientists, educators and even homeowners.
John Simpson, of the Rocky Mountain Institute in Colorado, will give the keynote address at noon for delegates and again at 7 p.m. for the public.
RMI is a non-profit organization that was established in 1982 with a focus on energy policy. It now has an annual budget of $12 million and 80 full-time staff.
Exhibitors with a variety of technologies will be featured throughout the day and it will be open to the public from 6 to 7 p.m. For a detailed agenda and tickets, go to www.oeia.ca
The OEIA was formed two years ago with the support of the Central Okanagan Economic Development Commission because it was felt it was time, with the environment and global warming issues on the minds of many.
At the time, a number of green technology companies were developing in the Okanagan.
