Last year it was a condo tour with a difference.

This year, a West Kelowna couple say they plan to scare more people as well as raise money for the local boys and girls club on Halloween.

Jody Hudek-Waites says she and her husband Graham will provide Halloween lovers with a haunted house to tour through again this year after about 500 people took in the sites at their West Kelowna acreage last fall.

“It was really great, we had different degrees for smaller children and for the older kids and adults we did a pretty good job of scaring them,” she said.

Prior to last year the Okanagan couple had spent years setting up elaborate haunted houses for neighborhood kids to enjoy.

But when they moved into a new house with more room they decided to step up their efforts and let the community come in and be scared to death.

Not only did they provide a haunt for locals they also raised money for charity, passing on over $400 for the Small Animal Rescue Society.

This year the Okanagan Boys and Girls Club will be the benefactor.

“This year we’re trying to make it a little bit bigger,” said Hudek-Waites. “We suspect more people are going to come through. We have four times the amount of people working with us this year.”

A cast and crew of over 20 will be involved in the haunted house. Last year the couple utilized six rooms in their house and say this year will be even bigger.

Hudek-Waites adds it all started from a love of Halloween.“My husband and I have always been huge fans of Halloween and over the years we’ve just collected an amazing amount of stuff,” she said.

“It was getting bigger and bigger so we thought why don’t we do it bigger and advertise and let people come.”

Come they did. Lineups forced the couple to take people in groups last year and this year they are planning to present the haunted house for three days leading up to Halloween.

Signs are being made by the boys’ and girls’ club to direct people to the haunted house on Paynter road in Westbank and admission is by donation to the local charity. But Hudek-Waites isn’t letting on what people will find inside their haunted house.

“We’re working on making it a little bit spookier than last year but we don’t want to say too much,” she said.
