A West Kelowna couple came home late Saturday night to discover a woman passed out on their front porch and their house on fire.

RCMP Const. Steve Holmes said that police were called to a residence in the 2500 block of Butt Road in West Kelowna at 2 a.m. on Aug. 22, after a couple came home and discovered the 47-year-old woman unconscious on their porch. The couple also found smoke coming from an open door inside their home.

Holmes noted the fire department came to the scene and extinguished the blaze, but not before considerable damage was caused to the house.

Flames were already coming from the windows and roof of the two-storey house when firefighters arrived. Damage to the home was estimated at $280,000.

Holmes said the home is being looked at by a restoration company.

“I do know that the home is not habitable at this point.”

Holmes said investigation revealed that the woman was in possession of a prescription medication bottle from the house. “She seemed to be under the influence of something.”

He noted that the homeowners did not know who the woman was. Holmes said the woman is from Canyon, a small town in the Kootenays outside of Creston.

The woman was arrested at the scene, and later released. Holmes said the cause of the fire is still under investigation. He added that no formal charges had been laid against the woman at this time, pending the outcome of the investigation.

Holmes said the couple called 911 immediately, and were certain they had locked up the home when they left earlier that evening.
