Davis: Don’t panic at rumors of Twilight sell-out

NewS.113.20091120001748.November20Movies_20091120.jpg

As Dennis Hopper said in Speed: “Pop quiz hotshot!”

It’s Friday—the opening night of The Twilight Saga: New Moon and you don’t have tickets yet. Your daughter is upset because she won’t get to see it opening night and not be able to text, Twitter or Facebook her friends within minutes of the credits rolling about how dreamy Robert Pattinson is. She is near tears because she has heard that it is sold out everywhere for the next week and she will be the only one of her friends that hasn’t seen it yet. What do you do? WHAT DO YOU DO?

Don’t panic because the rumours of sell-outs are likely exaggerated and there are tickets available, if you know where to look.

I would guess that by the time you read this, the Grand 10 will likely be sold out of its Friday early shows and the Capitol will be close to being sold out.

Your best bet would be to contact the Paramount Theatre as they are playing it in their largest auditorium and they are more likely to have tickets left. (As well, if you take a donation for the food bank when you go see it at the Paramount, you will receive a free New Moon mini poster.)

There are also other options for all the theatres such as late evening shows, which are less likely to sell out, and weekend matinees which are unlikely to sell out.

Sandra Bullock steps away from romantic comedies to star in The Blindside, based on the true story of Michael Oher, a homeless African-American youngster from a broken home, taken in by a well-to-do white family who help him fulfill his potential. He goes from being homeless to become an All-American football player. Like many inspirational true stories, we already know the outcome, but the story of how the characters get there can be riveting and emotional.

Planet 51 is a new animated comedy that loosely takes the story of E.T. and turns it around to make a human the alien. While you cannot smell what “The Rock” is cookin’, you can hear it as former wrestler Dwayne Johnson stars as the voice of an astronaut who travels to a distant planet, only to find out that it is inhabited by beings that have a desperate fear of being invaded. This one looks cute for the kids as well as having enough pop-culture references to keep adults entertained. Other notable voices include Jessica Biel, Justin Long, Seann William Scott, Gary Oldman and John Cleese.

As next week is Thanksgiving in the United States, there are a number of new movies opening next Wednesday. John Travolta and Robin Williams star in the comedy Old Dogs, as not-so-kid-savvy bachelors who are unexpectedly charged with the care of 7-year-old twins.

George Clooney’s voice is featured in The Fantastic Mr. Fox, an animated adaptation of the beloved Roald Dahl story. Finally, the creators of The Matrix are back with the high-action movie Ninja Assassin. I will have more on these movies next week.

Rick Davis is the manager of the Capitol Theatre in West Kelowna.
