Sing with the symphony, international soloists
Updated: November 09, 2009 4:20 PM
The Okanagan Symphony is looking for a few good singers—120 to be specific.
In May, the symphony celebrates its 50th anniversary with a stage-filling performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, and performs the world premiere of Imant Raminsh’s Quaternity. Both feature the 120-voice OSO Chorus, made up of auditioned singers from up and down the Okanagan Valley.
Soloists for the May 7, 8 and 9 performances in three cities (Kelowna, Penticton, Vernon) will be Heidi Muendel, soprano; Judith Forst, mezzo; Peter Collins, tenor; and Gidon Saks, baritone.
Auditions will be held in Kelowna on Wednesday, Nov. 18, 7 p.m. at the Kelowna Senior Secondary music school room; in Penticton on Wednesday, Nov. 25, 7 p.m. in the Columbia Elementary School on Alison Street; and in Vernon on Wednesday Dec. 2, 7 p.m. at a location to be announced.
Singers should prepare one work which shows range and confidence.
Regular rehearsals begin in January, and will be held every Wednesday evening, and one Sunday afternoon per month. Singers must attend two monthly Wednesdays and all Sundays until the performance.
Singers must also attend one meet and greet orientation rehearsal to pick up music, ask questions and pay fees, either on Sunday Nov. 29 from 2 to 5 p.m. in Kelowna; or Sunday Dec. 6 from 2 to 5 p.m. in Vernon both at the same location as auditions and rehearsals.
The symphony says this is a remarkable opportunity for valley singers to perform with a professional symphony orchestra; to participate in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to perform in Beethoven Ninth; and to sing in three performances of a world premiere.
Singers will also share a stage with some outstanding international soloists, including Judith Forst.
Auditions can be booked with the chorus manager by emailing jeforsyth@shaw.ca.
Updates to schedules will be posted on the symphony website at www.okanagansymphony.com.
