The Kelowna SPCA branch has worked tirelessly to make some changes to the 30-year-old animal shelter building located on Casorso Road.
The Kelowna animal shelter was built in 1990, but as the Okanagan Valley continues to grow, so do the demands on this shelter.
“Things look different than in 1990. We have more animals coming into our care as well as more animals to take care of through emergency rescue and cruelty calls. The valley has grown but our shelter has not, said Kelowna SPCA branch manager Jim Inglis.
Inglis has been working with some local supporters in the home building industry including Kevin Edgecombe, of Edgecombe Builders.
“Kevin has been a huge supporter of our shelter for several years and has been great to work with on this project,” Inglis said.
“He has a lot of expertise in this area and has utilized his connections to get free product such as window or cabinets from Norelco Cabinets.”
The Kelowna branch continues its transformation and has seen changes such as the addition of a kitten room, a new cat room which will allow the cats fresh air and natural light, a rodent room as well as a bigger reception area for the staff to better serve the public and their animals.
“We will be inviting the public down for an Open House in December and encourage everyone to come out, watch for the date and details.”
The B.C. SPCA organization continues to find the demands growing in the Okanagan, whether it be emergency rescue or medical calls, investigating animal cruelty complaints, or dealing with finding homes for homeless animals in need of adoption.
A big job for many very passionate staff requires big dollars.
The SPCA relies heavily on public donations and successful fundraisers to keep their doors open as only 1.3 per cent of their funding comes from the government.
To support your local SPCA, participate in the second annual Angels for Animals Gala on Nov. 14, presented by Aquarius Mortgages and Silk FM.
This fun-filled evening will include a wine reception with wine provided by St. Hubertus Estate Winery and a four-course meal paired with Okanagan wines to follow.
Tickets are available at the Kelowna SPCA animal shelter, 3785 Casorso Rd., or by calling 250-861-7722.
