Did you know that Kelowna hosts more than 200 special events between April and October?

There are festivals, sporting events and charity fundraisers.

Other events occur during the fall and winter, many focusing around the Christmas holidays.

June, July and August will see at least 50 events. There will be the Fat Cat Children’s Festival; Walks for Diabetes, Osteoporosis and ALS; Golf Tournaments; 30K Bikeathon; Vintage Car Show; Parks Alive; Westside Daze; Cherry Fair; Fishing Forever for Disabled and the Apple Triathlon, to name a few.

You can be a part of the fun.

Events like these need you to volunteer.

What would you do?

Typical tasks might be directing parking lot traffic, taking tickets, handing out programs, security patrol, helping at children’s activity centers, setting up and taking down, keeping the grounds tidy, or supporting staff and volunteers with refreshments.

In return, volunteers often are given “goodies.” You could receive food and beverage treats, T-shirts or free passes to the event.

Do you have some time over the summer? We can help you get involved. Join our Special Events Volunteers.

Send us your contact information. We pass it on to agencies seeking special event volunteers. You can then choose what fits best with your passion and time.

If you are an organization needing volunteers, let us know. We will send you our Special Events Registry of Volunteers.

Volunteers are kept on the Special Events Registry for one year, at which time they are contacted to confirm further availability.

Dawn Wilkinson is the coordinator for the Community Information and Volunteer Centre.
