Carli Berry, one semester away from earning a degree in journalism, has joined the staff at The NEWS.

Berry, 20, is from Port Alberni and graduated from Alberni District Secondary School in 2012. She will complete her Bachelor of Journalism degree later this year at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops. Berry will be with The NEWS until the end of July. Reporter Candace Wu is on sabbatical until that time (see column page A18).

“We are pleased to add Carli to our news team for these two months and we’re confident the wider community of readers and sources will welcome her to Parksville Qualicum Beach,” said NEWS editor John Harding. “It’s good to see young people are still excited about our profession and I’m sure we will benefit from Carli’s talent and enthusiasm as much or more than she benefits from the experience.”

“I’m grateful to The NEWS and Black Press for this opportunity,” said Berry. “I look forward to meeting with local residents, telling their stories and learning more about the day-to-day operation of a community newspaper.”
