      <title>Playing with swords and sorcery</title>
      <link>http://www.bclocalnews.com/news/87527777.html</link>
      <description>Everyone likes to escape.
Some people go to the beach. Some prefer the mountainous backcountry, some a darkened movie theatre.
Dylan MacDonald’s refuge is a world of spells, sorcery and zombies. The 19-year-old Burnaby resident figures he spends the equivalent of four full days a week playing the role-playing card game Magic: The Gathering.
He plays at home with friends. He plays online. He even plays at work; he has a part-time job at a store dedicated to Magic and similar games where like-minded aficionados drop by for a game after school, acquire new cards or to just sort through their collections and swap strategies with other players.
Unlike traditional board games like Monopoly or checkers that emphasize competition, role playing games are more like interactive storytelling. Instead of moving a metallic boot or plastic token across coloured squares, players assume the roles of characters that exist in some sort of fictional setting. The choices a player makes on behalf of their character as he moves through the game give a sense of narrative experience.</description>
