An Abbotsford man is facing charges of second degree murder after police discovered the body of a 52-year-old woman at an apartment complex Tuesday morning.

Daniel Raymond Casgrain, 54, was expected to appear in Abbotsford provincial court yesterday in connection to the murder of Hendrikje Priester.

The victim and suspect lived together in a common-law relationship.

Police were called just prior to 7:30 a.m. to an apartment in the 33300 block of Mayfair Avenue, where officers found Priester's body in a second-floor suite, said Const. Casey Vinet.

Casgrain was located in the same suite and arrested and taken into custody for questioning.

Police have attended the suite previously, but wouldn't elaborate about why.

"We have been to the residence in the past, and any previous dealings with the occupants will form part of the investigation," said Vinet.

"However, the role the previous visits play is still to be determined."

The cause of death will be determined by an autopsy expected to occur yesterday.

"The autopsy will determine how long the victim was in the residence, but it appears to be less than 24 hours," said Vinet.

Investigators were waiting on a warrant late into Tuesday afternoon to conduct a thorough search of the apartment.

As the case is deemed a homicide the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) will take on the investigation with the assistance of the APD.

Police towed a black Chevrolet Blazer with a smashed rear window from the parking lot of the Seniors Resource Centre on McCallum Road in connection with the investigation, said Vinet.

"What, if any, part the vehicle plays in the death is unknown at this point," he said.

IHIT investigators are calling this a domestic homicide, and have determined the death is not linked to other recent murders, or to gangs and drugs.
