The New Westminster Hyacks football team has got into the spirit of the Song Search New West contest, starring in a YouTube video singing the chorus of the song "Carry The Flame."
The team is shown getting a brief rehearsal with one of the judges, songwriter Don McLeod, and then they launch into the song, written by McLeod and fellow judge Graham Wardle as a way to stir interest in the contest.
The contest is seeking residents' submissions for a song to be performed at the Feb. 9 Torch Relay Community Celebration in Queen’s Park.
Entries will be judged by a panel of music industry and celebrity judges, including Wardle, a New West resident and actor on the CBC TV series Heartland.
A video showing Wardle and McLeod writing the song "Carry The Flame" is also posted on YouTube, as another way to spread the word about the contest.
Contest prizes include a professional recording session with McLeod, songwriter, music producer and co-founder of the School Alliance of Student Songwriters (SASS BC).
The New Westminster Torch Relay Celebration Committee, City of New Westminster and SASS BC partnered together to present the contest.
Local songwriters, singers and musicians are asked to theme their submissions around the topic of inspiration or aspiration, as it pertains to New Westminster’s history and heritage, community, and multicultural and aboriginal make up. The theme is open to interpretation and songwriters are encouraged to explore what inspires them and what they aspire to be.
Submissions must be in digital video form and uploaded to the contest website www.songsearchnewwest.com between Nov. 30 and Jan. 11.
