Still some roadways not yet reopened after Cowichan flooding

Road closures remain in effect in the wake of Friday’s flooding in Duncan.
Portions of Lakes, Trunk and Tzouhalem Roads are still closed to traffic.
The section of Lakes from Beverly to the traffic light where Trunk and Tzouhalem Roads intersect is still shut down. Vehicles are also being turned around at Trunk and Campbell, as flood waters have not yet receded from Tzouhalem Road just before Brier Avenue. Maple Bay residents have to go around the area by using Jaynes Road to reach Duncan.
A spokesman with the Municipality of North Cowichan working on the stretch of road between Lakes and Trunk said crews were not yet comfortable with the level of the water to reopen the road.
Sandbags still line the middle of that entire section of roadway.
Heavy rain Saturday night didn’t help the situation, although drier conditions with brief periods of sunshine Sunday were a welcome relief.
Meanwhile, the Lakes Road roundabout reopened Saturday afternoon to all but southbound traffic after debris was cleared from in front of flooded homes along Beverly Street and pumps were removed.
Some homeowners at the lower end of Beverly returned Saturday to view the mess and do whatever clean-up they could, but few stayed.
