Saturday’s official opening of Duncan’s upgraded Craig Street has been postponed as city leaders and staff deal with the flooding emergency, Mayor Phil Kent said late Friday afternoon.

A new date for Craig Street’s opening bash is pending.

“We needed to postpone the opening because of the local emergency situation,” he said as staff watched tide levels and rainfall that could cause more flooding.

“We’ve got our hands more than full with this significant issue.”

Local leaders declared a state of emergency Friday as parts of Cowichan Tribes land, the city and North Cowichan were swamped as rainwater skirted around dikes beside the swollen Cowichan and Koksilah rivers.
