Resurfacing, riprap projects announced

Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon MP Chuck Strahl and Chilliwack-Hope MLA Barry Penner braved the rain and the rushing waters of Silver Creek today to formally announce three infrastructure projects in the Hope and Fraser Canyon region.

The projects, three or two-way splits between the provincial, federal and municipal governments, fall under the Building Canada Fund and Infrastructure Economic Stimulus Fund.

Penner and Strahl headed for the Silver Creek Bridge on Flood-Hope road, Friday, November 20, to view an eroding riverbank that is threatening the bridge. Rebuilding the bank with rock will cost $152,150 – a cost to be shared between the federal, provincial and municipal government. A 10-metre section of the dike upstream of the bridge and a 30-metre section downstream are to be replaced.

Another project announced was the $3,600,000 repaving of TransCanada Highway #1 from Laidlaw to Flood-Hope Road - project costs are to be shared between the provincial and federal governments.

Another major resurfacing of the TransCanada Highway #1 will take place between Yale and just south of Boston Bar. The hot-in-place recycling resurfacing technique will be used through the Fraser Canyon to reduce the amount of new material needed and to keep emissions low. Most of the resurfacing will take place between the Sailor Bar Tunnel and Anderson Bridge.

Resurfacing of the Fraser Canyon will cost $3,420,000 - a cost to be shared between the provincial and federal governments.

The three projects had originally been announced by the office of the Premier in late September, part of 174 projects approved in the provincial and federal governments’ efforts to create jobs and stimulate the economy.
