Surrey is considering turning a former North Surrey hotel into housing for the homeless.

Surrey looked at a plan Monday night to convert the former Howard Johnson Hotel at 13245 King George Hwy. into a 56-room apartment complex for homeless people.

The property was purchased by the province last year, and has since been used as temporary housing for 20 people.

Victoria is now planning to convert the motel – renamed Peterson Place – into a complex for those in need of shelter.

"Residents of Peterson Place will be men, women and families who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless," a Surrey planning report states. "Priority will be given to people who currently reside or whose origins are in Surrey."

The tenants living there would be under the protection and restrictions provided under provincial legislation.

"Peterson Place will be operated under the terms and conditions of the Residential Tenancy Act, such that all residents will: be required to sign a tenancy agreement; pay rent; have no time limit on their tenancy," and be evicted for non-payment of rent or disruptive behaviours, the planning report states.

The issue will be going to public hearing Nov. 30.
