The provincial and federal governments have announced $1.5 million in upgrades to the Mission Bridge to make the structure safer for pedestrians and cyclists.

The height of the side railings on the bridge will be increased.

Victoria and Ottawa have split the $1.5 million bill, and work has already started.

“As our community grows, we need to encourage our residents to use environmentally friendly forms of transportation,” said Abbotsford MP Ed Fast, who hopes more cyclists will use the bridge to commute across the Fraser River.

“The project reduces the potential for accidents, encourages cyclists and pedestrians to use the bridge, and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.”

Abbotsford-Mission MLA Randy Hawes also said the raised railings will be a safety feature for drivers, reducing the risk of them leaving the road should they be involved in an accident on the bridge.
