Montecito and Buckingham elementaries were among the Burnaby schools recognized Wednesday with Garfield Weston Awards for Excellence in Education for improvements in academics.
Montecito was named second runner-up in the category Determination in Academic Achievement - Elementary and awarded a $1,000 prize. The category honours top-performing schools where the average parental income at the school is among the bottom 25 per cent of the province.
Buckingham elementary was named a School of Distinction in the category Improvement in Academics - Elementary. This honours schools that have experienced the fastest, most consistent improvement in their academic performance over the past five years.
The awards are based on an analysis of the Education Ministry’s student results data for each school included in the Fraser Institute’s annual survey of B.C. schools.
