Strong winds and heavy rain have put neighbourhoods of South Delta on flood alert.

Since Monday, the municipality has been at stage two—"a heightened level of readiness—in their flood preparedness plan, focusing on the areas of Boundary Bay and Beach Grove.

Acting director of engineering Steven Lan said that means sealing beach access points with sandbags and keeping residents in concerned areas up to date with electronic message signboards.

"We have our staff go out to monitor the situation, and we have a portable drainage pump that's ready to be deployed as well. All of those measures have been undertaken," he said, adding a portable generator is also on hand.

Lan said if residents feel sandbags are warranted at their properties, they are available at many of the beach access points or people can call Delta's engineering operations department at 604-946-5334.

"What we're doing now is we're going to check the forecast again and see what the next week holds," he said.

As of Thursday morning there continued to be a rainfall warning for Metro Vancouver according to Environment Canada, with 40 to 70 mm of rainfall expected in the evening. The strong southerly winds are have eased below warning criteria.
