Dorothy, the Tin Man, the Scarecrow and the Cowardly Lion will come to Centre Stage next month as Summerland Secondary School stages The Wiz.

The play is an updated musical version of the classic story, The Wizard of Oz.

Heather Ayris, drama teacher at the high school, said 90 students are involved in the production.

All the major roles are cast twice.

Ayris said the play is a departure from earlier productions of Grease and Chicago.

“This year, we wanted to go for a new audience,” she said. She explained that the story should appeal to younger viewers.

At the same time, she expects the story to appeal to a wide range of Summerland playgoers.

“This town is so supportive of musical theatre,” she said.

Ayris added that the musical play works well for the actors involved.

“So much of it is the cast and what they suit,” she said.

The play will be shown at Centre Stage Theatre Dec. 2 to 5 and Dec. 9 to 12 at 7 p.m. Saturday matinees will be held on the Saturdays at 1 p.m.

Tickets for the production are available at the Summerland Secondary School office and at the Beanery.
