Delta Police Chief Jim Cessford has been named Delta citizen of the year.

At the annual Delta chamber of commerce awards gala on Friday, he said he accepted the honour on behalf of all the police officers and firefighters he works with every day, praising them for their courage and their commitment to making Delta one of the safest communities anywhere.

The chief specifically thanked his wife Sheila who he said has been his driving force and inspiration.

He added that to be successful you had to surround yourself with outstanding people and in his 40 years of policing he has worked with some of the best, naming a number of DPD members.

His remarks drew a standing ovation as he exited the podium.
