The City of Richmond announced late Thursday that Richmond Mounties will have brand new digs come 2012.

But does the press release also foreshadow another announcement, that the city will extend its contract with the RCMP beyond the next three years?

Richmond RCMP's new home come 2012 is the brand new state-of-the-art headquarters that currently houses the 2010 Vancouver Integrated Security Unit on No. 5 Road.

"This is an exceptional opportunity for the city," Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie said in the press release. "Our RCMP detachment has outgrown its current location and this move provides us with an outstanding facility as well as a cost-effective solution to replacing the existing facility."

The new facility, at nearly 108,000 square feet, is more than double the current detachment's size.

The security unit building is built to post-disaster standards.

As far as the future of the city-owned site of the current detachment goes: "It will be evaluated and a feasibility study will determine its future," the city's press release says.
