A 78-year-old Abbotsford man died this morning after he was hit by a car while travelling on his motorized scooter.
Abbotsford Police spokesman Ian MacDonald said the man was heading westbound on Marshall Road at about 5:30 a.m. when he jetted into traffic and was struck by a Chevy Astro van near Eleanor Avenue.
MacDonald said it appears that the man, who was heading downhill on the sidewalk, may have hit the dip in a driveway entrance.
The dark, rainy conditions would have made it difficult for drivers to see him, MacDonald said. The driver of the van was fully co-operative.
"We have no reason to be examining this from a criminal standpoint," MacDonald said.
The man's name has not yet been released.
MacDonald said the incident is tragic and is a reminder to those on bicycles, scooters and skateboards to make themselves visible to drivers by wearing reflective gear or using lights.
