Mushrooms, marijuana discovered in drug raid
Charges of production of a controlled substance and possession for the purpose of trafficking are being recommended against a man after police raided a marijuana grow operation in Lake Cowichan.
A raid was undertaken last Wednesday, Nov. 4, at a building on South Shore Road, with the Lake Cowichan RCMP seizing more than 100 marijuana plants, dried marijuana buds and grow equipment.
All rooms on the second floor of the Lake Cowichan building, which is not far from the arena, were used for the grow-op. The building at one time was a U-brew company and later a daycare business.
Cpl. Kurt Gottfried said the first floor also contained a large-scale psilocybin mushroom (better known as magic mushroom) laboratory for producing spores, which were stored in flaps and syringes for distribution.
Mushroom growing kits were also being produced for distribution.
“RCMP members wore breathing masks and safety suits during the search,” said Gottfried. “We were just trying to be on the safe side, especially after some of the officers starting to get headaches.”
Gottfried said the investigation relating to the mushroom production is still ongoing and once evidence is collected the RCMP hope to lay additional charges.
“A male associated to the residence was located and released on a promise to appear in court for the marijuana grow operation,” he said.
The police were at the building for about six hours before the investigation was completed.
