A discussion on solid waste options for the region is scheduled for Nov. 18 in Coquitlam.

A forum entitled Future of the Region Sustainability Dialogues on Solid Waste features a five-person panel combining scientific credentials and industry experience.

About 3.5 million tonnes of garbage are produced in the region and a little over 50% is recycled. Up to 500,000 tonnes is being shipped to the Cache Creek landfill, which is scheduled to close in the next few years. With population on the rise, questions are being asked about what to do with Metro Vancouver’s waste.

Next Wednesday’s forum at the Executive Plaza Hotel is intended to challenge traditional thinking and to stimulate actions.

Among those presenting will be University of Victoria’s Andrew Weaver, Paul Gilman, Covanta Energy’s senior vice-president and chief sustainability officer, Brock McDonald, executive director of the Recycling Council of B.C., Upholstery Arts’ CEO Len Laycock, and Tony Sperling, Sperling Hansen Associates president and a landfill design specialist.

The event runs from 7 to 9 p.m., with registration and refreshments offered at 6:30 p.m. The hotel is located at 405 North Rd.

Further forums are being held at Langley’s Coast Hotel and Convention Centre on Nov. 19, in Vancouver on Nov. 20 at the SFU Wosk Centre for Dialogue, and in West Vancouver on the same day at the Hollyburn Country Club.
