Two people have been rescued from a Porsche SUV that careened into a wide water-filled roadside ditch on Westminster Highway after a 100-foot tree fell on top of it, just east of No. 8 Road.
Jason Levelton, from East Richmond Nurseries, didn't witness the accident, but he certainly saw it coming.
Levelton said a cottonwood tree, one of many that line the ditch that runs parallel to the south side of Westminster Highway, actually fell on top of the Porsche Cayenne, crushing the entire front end of it.
He estimates the tree was about 30-metres tall, enough to cross the entire width of roadway.
The accident occurred around 1:30 p.m. Monday.
"It fell onto it while they were driving down the road," Levelton said.
Levelton said it was just four or five months ago when another rotten cottonwood fell.
"They fall across the highway all the time."
He said he's been asking for the trees to be taken down because they're a hazard, but those pleas have fallen on deaf ears.
"We've been trying to get these trees down from ditch because they're rotten in the ditch and nobody's been doing anything about it because there's environmental issues. But they're rotten and they're falling all the time."
Wind may have contributed to Monday's accident.
The occupants of the Porsche were trapped in their vehicle until rescue personnel arrived at the scene.
"They were moving a bit, but they weren't looking too good though," Levelton said.
There are conflicting reports, but according to farmer Bill Zylmans,of W&A Farms, two people were trapped in the Porsche, a man and a woman.
Rescuers removed one of them, and that individual appeared to be okay, but later removed a second individual, who didn't appear to be moving much if at all, Zylmans said.
Richmond RCMP Cpl. Jennifer Pound said her initial information is that the male occupant of the Porsche managed to get out on his own, but the second occupant required rescuing.
The jaws of life were used by Richmond Fire-Rescue to free the occupants.
The accident occurred in front of East Richmond Nurseries.
Both victims are currently being treated at Richmond Hospital, but the extent of their injuries is not known as of 2:30 p.m.
