Boston Bar and North Bend will be making a little history of their own November 11th holding, to the best of local knowledge, their very first Remembrance Day Service.
The brainchild of local historian Joan Blakeborough, the community will make use of a simple plaque placed years before, in honour of those who served, on a water fountain at the community’s first pool.
“Now the plaque stands alone, and it will serve as our cenotaph,” says long-time resident Irene Fisher.
“In the past we have either had to go up to Lytton or down to Hope to recognize our own veterans,” adds Fisher. “We always knew there was a marker at the pool and decided this year it would be used.”
“It is time for this community to remember those – from this community – who fought in those wars.”
Two mountains in the Skuzzy Creek region are even named after locals who died in WW2, adds Remembrance Day committee member, Terry Raymond.
So far six wreaths will be laid Wednesday morning. A list of those from the North Bend-Boston Bar area who fought in the wars is also being compiled.
“Lest we forget… and we are reminded of that a lot by those coming home today,” adds Fisher.
The community’s very first Remembrance Day parade will begin to form up at 10 a.m. at the former North Bend school, now community centre, before moving onto the A.C. Carlson Pool for the service.
After the service everyone is invited back to the community centre for refreshments.
