Mat program for homeless up and running at Port Moody church

The Cold Wet Weather Mat program is off to a brisk start, according to organizers.
Hope for Freedom Society's Rob Thiessen said five clients were helped the first night of the program, now in its third year, and located at Port Moody's St. Andrew's United Church for November. They are averaging around six people a night, he added.
The managing director said there are "more than enough volunteers" at each of the participating churches, which include Eagle Ridge Bible Fellowship, Coquitlam Alliance, Calvary Baptist and Northside.
Homeless persons are picked up at designated points in each of the Tri-Cities and bused to the shelter. They are provided with a mat and blankets for the night, an evening meal, a breakfast and bag lunch, then transported back to the muster points.
