After pinning down the preferred route of a rapid transit system linking the West Shore to downtown last week, the next step for B.C. Transit is to decide which technology will use the route.

B.C. Transit will host open houses and public input sessions to help determine which direction to go in terms of transportation modes.

The preferred route begins at Colwood Corners, runs up the Island Highway to a dedicated transit route between the Trans-Canada Highway and Galloping Goose Trail to Uptown. From there, riders can carry on to downtown or elsewhere on the Saanich Peninsula.

In Victoria, B.C. Transit is considering running transit along Douglas Street one direction, and on Government Street in the other.

Seniors, students could pay more

B.C. Transit is considering raising fares.

Staff are proposing to scrap discounted fares for students and seniors, starting next year, and adding 25 cents to the fare for everyone else.

Transit users would pay a flat fare of $2.50.

Seniors and students would continue to get a discount on monthly or annual passes, and on multiple-ticket packages, however.

B.C. Transit will vote on the fare hike in January. To send your thoughts to B.C. Transit, e-mail victoria_busline@bctransit.com.
